A glorious time of year in many respects, autumn seems to edge into our consciousness with delicate precision. Slowly. Almost beyond notice, a few leaves begin to curl, and then pale shades of red, orange, and yellow merge with a fading green. Finally, it hits us. It’s fall. It’s here. Already? So soon? But how? We barely finished summer on the deck, mowing the grass, and clipping blooms from a vibrant and hopeful garden.
We look the other way for a while, thinking maybe this too shall pass and summer will win the day once more, returning with a vengeance. But it’s not to be, Autumn is in motion, determined and swaggering with its annual burst of confidence. Days pass. The colors deepen and thicken around us, literally consuming the landscape. We search for touches of green … still lingering, still visible … with dashed hopes, regret, and sadness lining our thoughts like a cloud of despair.
But, finally, we accept that the seasons are moving on with or without us, and we breathe a sigh of relief. This too shall pass. We will make it through fall and winter only to rejoice in the spring with the arrival of new life. ~
